What is Subliminal Stimuli? Subliminal stimuli is a sensory stimulation below an individuals absolute threshold (the minimum amount of stimulus energy that can be detected 50% of the time) for conscious perception. Subliminal stimuli occurs whenever stimuli presented below the threshold for awareness are found to influence thoughts, feelings,or actions. Visual stimuli, such as words or pictures can be unidentifiable to the viewers conscious perception, although some will argue that such stimuli can exert an effect on an individuals behaviors and or judgments. There is also audio subliminal stimuli that a person may hear in songs,or recordings which can contain messages below these audible sounds that are inaudible as far as conscious perception. The theory behind the use of subliminal stimuli is that the messages being received from an individuals audio or visual levels will be received directly by the subconscious mind.

The company ScentAir consists of four types of scents. The aroma Billboard smell attaches a smell to a billboard such as a chocolate smell to a milk advertisement. The Thematic smell uses scents to tie in sensory elements of a visual program to communicate ideas to enhance the mood of a themed atmosphere such as lavender in a french restaurant with a provincial style decor. Ambient scenting to freshen an odor or enhance a stores environment and Signature smells which are used by specific companies to help identify their products. This last type of scent marketing is a custom smell created for and used solely by one company. (Dowdey, 2010)..

An important aspect in companies or businesses is to advertise what they sell or what they offer in order to make money. Businesses use advertisements to attract customers. Therefore, it is no surprise that there are subliminal advertisements; subliminally embedding something that attracts an individual.

One of the most used methods is quickly flashing an image onto a screen. A famous incident is when movie goers were flashed phrases urging them to eat popcorn, and buy cola while they watched a movie in a theater.
This is done with a machine called a tachistoscope which can flash frames and images lasting 1/3000th of a second at five second intervals.

The reason of course is boredom.
Imagine you could reprogram your mind without the boredom of hearing constant repetitions of the conditioning you want to achieve. Imagine you switch on your CD player wherever you are and 'listen' to information ALL DAY LONG (and ALL NIGHT for that matter) without getting bored, because YOU can't hear it.

The modern concept of a psychological threshold was formulated by 19th century German philosopher-scientists Herbart, Weber, and Fechner to separate consciousness from unconsciousness. (Rouder & Morey, 2009).
Public awareness of subliminal advertising began with the 1957 publication of Vance Packard's book, The Hidden Persuaders. Packard described new motivational research marketing techniques being employed to sell products in the burgeoning post-war American market. The advertisements focused on consumers' hopes, fears, guilt, and sexuality and they were designed to persuade them to buy products they didn't need. (Mikkelson, 2010).

When radio and television stations began airing subliminal commercials, this led to two congressional bills to ban the practice being introduced in 1958 and 1959. However, both these were shelved before being voted upon.
In 1973, Dr. Wilson B. Key picked up where Vicary left off, publishing Subliminal Seduction, an indictment of modern advertisements filled with hidden messages and secret symbols, leading to the 24 January 1974 announcement by the FCC that subliminal techniques, "whether effective or not," were "contrary to the public interest," and that any station employing them risked losing its broadcast license. (True Subliminals, 2005).
